Dirt Devils is Sega AM3's off-road arcade racer, built for the Sega Model 3 board and released in Japan in November 1998 and in the US that December. Where Sega Rally 2 was about rally stages, Dirt Devils is about dirt ovals, a stadium and a desert endurance run, with all-terrain machines that get filthier every lap: mud pits cake the bodywork, water pools wash it clean, and both slow you down.

It never got a home version - a Dreamcast port was only ever a magazine rumour - so the arcade board is the only way it was ever played. Here the free RetroPlayers.Club Player runs it on your PC, set to free play: press Start and race.
How to Play Dirt Devils
Accelerate, brake, steer, and shift up or down through the gears; a separate key changes the camera view. The table below is the Player's starting map, and Controller Mapping moves any of it to your keyboard or a USB pad.
The Garage
Five machines are open from the start, each with the cabinet's own one-line pitch: the light-weight Desert Buggy, the quick and nimble Baja Bug, the Toyota Racetruck - a formidable fighter - an uncompromising Humvee, and the agile but tricky Euro-Prototype. The sixth, the big, bad Super-Truck, stays locked until you take first place on the high-score list of all three courses.
Three Courses
Canyon (Novice) is an eight-lap tri-oval at Boulder Canyon Raceway, run in high winds. Stadium (Pro) is a four-lap figure eight inside Tonatiu Stadium, home of the Great Bus Jump. Desert (Expert) is the Twin City 400, a four-lap endurance race that starts in the afternoon heat and finishes after dark. The arcade listings also point to a hidden stage inside the big arena dome.
Racing Dirty
The fastest line is rarely the clean one: cut across the rocks and grass where the course lets you, keep out of the deep mud and the standing water, and watch the car's paint disappear under the dirt as the laps go by.
The Cabinet
In arcades Dirt Devils sat you behind a force-feedback steering wheel with two pedals and a six-position shifter - five gears and reverse - on an adjustable seat, and up to two players raced at once. Sega ended service for the machines on March 31, 2017.
