L.A. Machineguns: Rage of the Machines is Sega AM3's follow-up to Gunblade NY, built for the Sega Model 3 board and released in Japan in December 1998. It was called Gunblade 2 while it was being made, and it keeps its predecessor's big mounted machine gun - but trades the helicopter for hoverbikes and New York for the American West in 2025.

The robotic terrorists of the Rage of the Machines strike Los Angeles at the opening of the Delta Othello skyscraper, with the US president in the crowd, and two agents of the Special Independent Force Against Terrorism give chase. The free RetroPlayers.Club Player runs it on your PC, on free play.

How to Play L.A. Machineguns: Rage of the Machines

Aim with the movement keys or the mouse, fire with the fire key or the left mouse button; the second trigger sits on its own key and the right mouse button. The table shows the starting keys and Controller Mapping changes them.

The Missions

The route runs Los Angeles: Down Town, Alcatraz: Military Prison, Las Vegas: The Strip and Yosemite: Underground Base, before the final mission in the Valley of Fire. The bikes fly while you shoot, and compared with Gunblade NY far more of the enemies come at you from the air.

From Gunblade to L.A.

Gunblade NY put players behind the gun of an experimental helicopter over Manhattan in 1995. L.A. Machineguns moves the story twenty years on and across the country to the West, with the same chunky gun-on-a-pivot controls and the same two-player co-op on the arcade cabinet, which came in standard and deluxe versions.

After the Arcade

A soundtrack album followed in 1999. In August 2010 both games came to the Wii as Gunblade NY & LA Machineguns, with online leaderboards and Wii Zapper support. Sega ended service for the arcade machines on March 31, 2017.
