Sega Hikaru Arcade 2001 1 Player Sega

Air Trix is Sega's 2001 skateboarding arcade game and the sequel to Top Skater, made by Hitmaker - the Sega studio that began as Sega AM3, made Top Skater in 1997 and became Hitmaker in 2000. Sega's catchline for it was SOUL OF SKATE. Top Skater had downhill courses and racing; Air Trix drops both and keeps you in the half-pipes, chaining tricks for score.

How to Play Air Trix

On the cabinet you stood on a skateboard deck that read two motions, a turn and a roll. In the Player the turn sits on Turn Left and Turn Right - A and D to begin with - the roll on Roll Left and Roll Right, the left and right arrow keys, the deck's four direction buttons on J, K, L and U, and Start is F. Their starting keys are in the controls table, and Controller Mapping can move them to other keys or a USB pad.

Tricks Into Height

Sega's own description boils the game down to three basic moves: combos, where you land tricks one after another; spins in the air; and grinds along the edge. Every landed trick builds speed, and the arcade listings add that each one lifts the next jump a little higher - more air, room for bigger tricks, and a bigger score when you link them together. Each skater also has a special trick of their own, set off by a command.

Skaters and Stages

Five skaters are on the select screen, with two more hidden. You take on one of two sets of half-pipes, or a training mode that demonstrates a basic trick, gives you a short time to try it and then moves on to the next. The attract sequence shows a skate park full of ramps and rails, a half-pipe inside a warehouse, and city streets.

The Cabinet

Air Trix shipped as a three-piece Deluxe cabinet with a projection monitor, for one player at a time: 107 inches deep, 47 wide, 89 high and 1,200 pounds. Its sound design was by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, the composer of Space Harrier, Out Run and After Burner. Sega's Japanese archive dates the arcade launch to February 2001, while Western listings say January.
