Brave Firefighters is Sega AM1's firefighting game from 1999 and the first game Sega built for its Hikaru arcade board. Instead of a gun, the cabinet gave you a fire-hose nozzle - about 1.8 kilograms of it, by Sega's own figure - that shook in your hands as you sprayed and was aimed straight at a 50-inch projection screen. Sega's description sets the scene: a fire has broken out in a hotel, and the people you have to bring out alive include the mayor.

No home console ever got it. Today it plays on your PC in the Retro Players Club Retro Player, with the coin slot switched off: press Start, aim with your mouse and get the water on the fire.
How to Play Brave Firefighters
The cabinet's hose becomes your mouse. Move the mouse to aim the stream, press the left button to spray water and the middle button to spray fog, a light mist instead of a hard stream. On the real cabinet you changed the spray by twisting the nozzle's tip. Start is F to begin with; it is the key in the table, and Controller Mapping can move it.
Beat the Clock
Every stage runs against a timer, and the arcade listings put it bluntly: the clock is the real enemy. Knock a fire down quickly and the game hands back bonus time. Aim for the base of the flames rather than the tips, and keep the water pressure in mind, because it drops as you spray and the stream weakens with it.
People in the Fire
Rescuing the trapped is half the job. If someone catches fire, turn the hose on them at once - for every couple of seconds they stay alight, five seconds come off your clock. Each level ends with a boss fire that has its own life meter, and a person you must protect from it while you fight.
The Attract Show
Leave the cabinet idle and it plays its own story: the mayor, Taylor F Smith, at a podium, clock captions reading PM 7:15, PM 7:24 and PM 7:32, the words FIRE OUTBREAK, fire engines racing through the city, and crews on an aerial ladder and inside burning buildings. A parental advisory screen in the game classifies it as suitable for all ages.
The Machine
Brave Firefighters belongs to what Sega called its Real Life Career Series, beside Emergency Call Ambulance, 18 Wheeler, Jambo! Safari, Airline Pilots and Crazy Taxi. Two players could stand at the cabinet and fight the same fire, with three-channel stereo and a subwoofer. Makito Nomiya wrote the music, which came out on a 1999 album shared with Airline Pilots. Sega's Japanese archive dates the arcade debut to July 1999; Western listings say June.
