How to Play Donkey Kong Country HD Edition

How to Play

Donkey Kong Country HD Edition runs natively on Windows, so it plays through the free RetroPlayers.Club Mini App on your desktop. Click Play on this page and the Mini App downloads the rebuild (about 9 MB with the game data), sets it up and starts it for you.

On the keyboard, the arrow keys move, Z jumps, A runs and rolls, X picks up and throws, S selects a Kong, Q and W are the shoulder buttons and Enter is Start. A USB controller plays too: the d-pad or left stick moves and the four face buttons are the SNES diamond. Premium members can set their own keys and controller buttons in the Visual Controller Mapper on this page.

About Donkey Kong Country HD Edition

This is Donkey Kong Country translated, instruction by instruction, from the original SNES program into native PC code by the DKC1Recomp project, with the game’s structure taken from a complete disassembly rather than guessed. The levels, the music, the physics and Donkey and Diddy’s moves are the 1994 game’s own; what the rebuild adds is the presentation: a 342×224 widescreen view whose level walls are handled so nothing past the level shows, nearest, bilinear or reconstruction scaling, a CRT television look with scanlines, phosphor mask, glow and curvature, and a dark settings panel on Escape.

What is new

Smooth animation and frame generation present in-between poses on 120 Hz displays, the pixel aspect can be the CRT’s 7:6 or square, and the Assist Tools add rewind, fast-forward and save-state slots. Mods > Dixie Kong Country switches to a variant with Dixie in the lead, built from the same game data. Candy’s in-game saves persist between launches.

Credits

DKC1Recomp is made by Elliott Tate and contributors on mstan’s snesrecomp framework, following the DKC2Recomp project; this is release v0.0.17, an alpha. It is a community project and not affiliated with Nintendo or Rare. Donkey Kong Country is a trademark of Nintendo.
